USING TOMCAT BAITS

Place Bait Where Rodents Will Find It
When using bait to control rats and mice, it’s critical to place it where rodents will find it – typically between their nest and their food source.  That means placing bait along rodent runways next to walls; in dark, secluded areas where rodents like to hide; in locations where you’ve seen signs of rats and mice (droppings, gnaw marks, nesting materials) or heard their movement at night. You may have to bait attics, along rafters and in drop ceilings near their area of activity.

Recommendations for Bait Placement
Indoors:

Rodent bait placement depends on the type of infestation you are dealing with.
For MICE, space placements at 8-12 foot intervals depending on the severity of the problem.  For RATS, place bait at 15-30 foot intervals, depending on the severity of the infestation.

A successful strategy for mice is to place glue traps or snap traps along their runways to intercept them on their way to feed.  Place bait blocks or pellets near the area where they are feeding.  If mice escape capture on the way to feed by taking a different route, the bait will be waiting for them as an alternate food source.

Outdoors:
Do NOT place TOMCAT bait blocks or place pacs down rat burrows outdoors. Rats are neophobic (afraid or wary of new objects) and will kick foreign objects out.  Loose pellets poured down a burrow are a better choice.

For best results, follow the directions on the bait packaging and keep bait away from children and pets.

USING TOMCAT BAIT STATIONS
To keep bait away from children, pets and other animals, place bait in a TOMCAT tamper-resistant bait station. Rodents feel secure in these bait stations where they find and eat the bait, but children and pets can’t get at it. Bait stations can be used indoors and out.

Tamper-resistant TOMCAT Bait Stations provide added safety when baiting around homes.  Use bait stations wherever you would place bait, if feasible.  Both bait blocks and pellets can be used inside bait stations.  Bait blocks can be secured in the stations for even greater security.  Snap traps can also be placed in the larger bait stations.

Get the Most from Bait Stations:

  • Place bait or traps in bait station.  Close cover; stations lock automatically.
  • Place station where you’ve seen signs of rats or mice (droppings, nesting materials, gnawed objects, for example).
  • When placed against a wall, be sure the holes of the bait station are positioned next to the wall.  Rats and mice, preferring to travel along walls, can enter the station from either side.
  • Small bait stations easily slip under appliances and in hard-to-reach places.
  • Check bait stations periodically to see if bait is eaten or the trap  has sprung. If necessary, move bait station to a different location where you’ve noticed signs of activity.
  • Keep up a fresh supply of bait until all signs of rodents have disappeared. Or continue to set the trap until activity ceases.
  • Clean stations periodically and refill with fresh bait or clean traps.

Securing Bait Stations:

If you use tamper-resistant bait stations, we recommend securing the station to prevent it from being moved, particularly outdoors.  If the bait station is secured, people or wildlife cannot shake the bait out of the station. Use caution when opening bait stations outdoors,: occasionally snakes like to curl up inside the station.

Bait stations can also be secured to patio blocks and  then placed on any surface.  They can also be chained to vertical posts, pipes, fences and other surfaces. Below are suggested methods for securing bait stations on a variety of surfaces:

  • Concrete surfaces/tile/patio block:  Attach the bait station with Liquid Nails®, concrete screws, contact cement, double sided tape, Velcro®
  • Asphalt/soil: Attach with barbed spikes, duckbill anchors, or Velcro® (asphalt)
